VUSD Music Academy

The VUSD After School Music Academy is designed to provide a high-quality, accessible enrichment opportunity for elementary students interested in music. 

Students in the Academy have the opportunity to rehearse, perform, and collaborate while learning from experienced instructors and experienced high school mentors.

About Visalia Music Academy

Our Mission

The VUSD After School Music Academy is committed to providing equitable, high-quality music enrichment for elementary students by fostering musical growth, creativity, and collaboration in a supportive and inspiring environment.

Vision

To build a vertically aligned, district-wide music community where students develop lifelong skills in music, leadership, and teamwork while preparing for continued success in middle and high school programs.

About Redwood High School Bands

Winds and Strings

Discover your sound. Build your skills.

Open to students grades 5-6


This program focuses on building strong musical foundations while playing as part of a group.

Strings:

Violin, Viola, Cello, Bass

Winds:

Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, Saxophone, Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba 


Benefits:

  • Learn a band instrument in a fun, team setting
  • Improve focus, discipline, and confidence
  • Make friends through shared musical experiences
  • Perform in exciting concerts throughout the year


Winds rehearsals are held at Redwood High School on Tuesdays/Thursdays from 4:30-6:30 pm


String rehearsals are held at Green Acres Middle School on Tuesdays/Thursdays from 4:30-6:30 pm


Enrollment Requirement:

Students participating in the Music Academy must also be enrolled in their school’s band program. The Academy is designed to enhance and support the learning happening during the school day.

While private lessons are encouraged, they are not required—ensuring equitable access for all students regardless of financial background. 

Percussion

Find the beat. Feel the energy.

Open to students grades 5-6


Percussion students explore rhythm through drums and keyboard percussion instruments. 

This hands-on program is perfect for students who love energy, movement, and teamwork.


Benefits:

  • Develop rhythm, coordination, and timing
  • Play on real middle and high school equipment
  • Be part of a high-energy ensemble
  • Perform at concerts and the VUSD Winter Showcase

Color Guard

Move. Perform. Shine.

Open to students grades 4-6


Color Guard combines dance, movement, and equipment (flags and props) to create exciting visual performances. 

No dance experience is needed—just a positive attitude and willingness to try!

  • Build confidence through performance
  • Learn choreography and teamwork
  • Improve coordination, strength, and expression
  • Perform in shows, including the Candy Cane Lane Parade and VUSD Winter Showcase


Color Guard rehearsals are held at Redwood High School on Tuesdays/Thursdays from 4:30-6:30 pm


Enrollment Requirement:

Students participating in the Music Academy Color Guard must also be enrolled in a VUSD Elementary School.

Program Structure

Participation in the VUSD After School Music Academy includes a commitment to consistent attendance, active listening, and regular practice.


To ensure student commitment, the program will begin with a “Try-It-Out Month” in August, allowing students and families to determine if they are ready for a full-year commitment.
